Capturing authentic and emotional portraits of people involves much more than just camera technique. It’s often outside the studio that the most exciting images are created—but that’s also where the greatest challenges lie. Lighting is constantly changing, backgrounds must be chosen on the spot, and sometimes there’s only a brief moment to capture a powerful shot. That’s exactly where this workshop with Manfred Jasmund comes in.
As an experienced portrait photographer, Manfred Jasmund regularly works under time pressure—especially during shoots with celebrities, where there are often only a few minutes to capture a compelling image. In this workshop, he’ll show you how to create expressive portraits even under such conditions: spontaneously, creatively, and with a keen eye for lighting, composition, and atmosphere.
After a brief theoretical introduction, we dive right into the practical work. Instead of working with professional models, participants deliberately photograph one another. This creates natural situations, authentic expressions, and hands-on learning on an equal footing. Together, we’ll explore how to make strategic use of available light, consciously incorporate backgrounds, and create emotional portraits using simple techniques.
Particular attention is paid to Manfred’s personal approach to working with the people in front of his camera—because powerful portraits are created not only through technique, but above all through communication, observation, and a keen sense of the moment.
Thanks to the intentionally small group size, there’s plenty of time for taking photos, experimenting, and receiving personalized feedback. This creates a relaxed workshop atmosphere where participants can learn through hands-on practice and have fun doing so.
About Manfred Jasmund
With his calm, precise visual language and his fine feeling for people, Manfred Jasmund is one of those photographers who do not simply take portraits, but allow them to come into being. In addition to portrait photography, his work also thrives on atmosphere, light and authenticity – far removed from artificial over-staging. The focus here is on consciously working with existing or artificial light reduced to the essentials.
In his workshop, Manfred Jasmund not only teaches the technical basics, but above all the photographic eye. He trains the participants’ personal perspective and gives them tips on how to focus on themselves. How do I find motifs that move me? And how do you develop your own visual language from a picture look that goes beyond pure technique?
Participants benefit from his many years of experience, his calm way of explaining things and a workshop concept that is both inspiring and practical. Anyone who wants to find a different philosophy behind their photography, authentic, emotional and with photographic depth, will find the ideal conditions for new creative impulses here.
