There is a difference between looking and seeing, and we must see what others overlook. It’s like the difference between simply “passively” listening and actively listening. We show the viewer of our picture where we have been looking.
We’re curious and can still be amazed by things and situations. We notice details—that’s where it all begins.
We must be open to new ideas, recognize connections and relationships, and create images.
Consciously Using Composition, Light, and Impact
Model, photographer, camera, location—and light. This workshop is all about the interplay of these elements. Paul Leclaire demonstrates how to create expressive images using minimal equipment and the available lighting, without any post-processing. The goal is to conceptualize and execute the photo right at the moment it’s taken.
Together, we’ll explore how framing, perspective, and depth of field determine the impact of a photo—even when the location seems to offer little. The focus is on selective seeing, clear composition, and a sense for the right moment. Photography takes place intuitively and deliberately, in the moment, with minimal direction from the photographer, and there will be moments when the model can also develop their own sequences of images. It’s a give-and-take process both in front of and behind the camera.
Light is observed, utilized, and subtly guided.
Every participant should be fully proficient with their own equipment, because this isn’t about image editing—it’s about getting the perfect shot the moment the shutter is released.

Paul Leclaire has been working as a freelance photographer for over five decades. His portraits are characterized by spontaneity, clarity, and the charm of imperfection. Rather than relying on conventional formulas, he seeks out new perspectives and uses light, gaze, and emotion to tell small stories through his images.
