Paul Leclaire’s workshops are all about “looking closely.”
There’s a difference between glancing and seeing, and we must see what others overlook. It’s like the difference between simply “passively” listening and actively listening. With every image, we direct the viewer’s gaze toward what has fascinated us. Curiosity, attentiveness, and an eye for detail are the starting point. Those who remain open to new ideas and recognize connections create images that are expressive and meaningful.

In this workshop, Paul Leclaire demonstrates how to create situational and atmospheric portraits using minimal equipment and by paying close attention to available light.
The goal is to use the small, black built-in flash strategically as a creative tool—not to use it as a flash, but to add highlights.
Together, we’ll explore how the conscious use of a clip-on flash can be used to create, enhance, or subtly alter lighting moods. The focus here isn’t on effects, but on images with character—supported by the flash, not dominated by it.
Participants learn to observe and assess light. The camera remains deliberately mobile—photographs are taken spontaneously, with a sense of the moment and the visual concept.
In the workshop, Paul Leclaire works with the Canon ETTL system and teaches participants how understanding ETTL flash behavior can help them make better use of natural ambient light. Those who master the control of the flash in relation to shadows and subject composition can create images with their own unique lighting character—regardless of whether they have a lot of equipment.
This workshop is designed for photographers who are confident in using their camera and flash equipment. The focus is not on post-processing, but on achieving perfect images at the moment the shot is taken.
