Paul Leclaire’s workshops are all about “learning to see again.”
There’s a difference between looking and seeing, and we must see what others overlook. It’s like the difference between simply “passively” listening and actively listening. Every image reveals where the photographer’s gaze was directed. Curiosity, attentiveness, and a willingness to notice details that others overlook are crucial. An openness to new things and the ability to recognize connections between light, people, and their surroundings lead to authentic and expressive photographs.
Dance is movement, expression, and the moment. This workshop isn’t about classical ballet poses or static shots—it’s about the challenge of capturing the essence of dance through photography. Paul Leclaire demonstrates how dance improvisations can be creatively captured using available light and a simple flash system—without staged stiffness, but with a sense of rhythm and timing.
The photoshoot takes place on location with two professional dancers. The session involves spontaneous choreography and is driven by movement—not staged, but observed, captured, and intuitively executed. The focus is on working with natural light, using white balance as a creative tool, selecting appropriate lenses, and balancing shutter speed, autofocus, and shutter lag with your own visual concept.
The goal is to have a finished image at the moment the photo is taken—not later on the computer.
The camera is viewed as a tool. Those who have a firm grasp of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, and metering modes can fully immerse themselves in capturing movement. Participants receive hands-on coaching while taking photos and learn how to create powerful images with minimal equipment. “The less you have in your bag or backpack, the freer you are to take photos”—that’s the principle.
Each participant should be proficient with their own equipment. Paul’s workshops focus on photography, not on editing photos with software.
The camera settings (e.g., a long exposure time of 1/6 second with the built-in flash) should be possible. The photo should be taken as soon as the shutter button is pressed.
