Filter photography is more than just technique – it changes how you consciously shape light and image effects. In this seminar, Daniel Spohn will show you how to use filters in a targeted way, understand light better and create atmospheric and convincing shots directly in the camera.
Seminar: More than a tool: Philosophy of filter photography – a question of attitude.
Photography is more than technique. It is the art of reading light – and shaping it in a targeted manner. This is exactly where filter photography begins: not as an accessory, but as a conscious decision to photograph in a different way.
At a time when many things are “simply solved later in image processing”, this workshop has a different focus. It is about creating on location. Not just capturing the light, but actively controlling it. Not correcting the moment, but consciously interpreting it.
Nature and landscape photographer Daniel Spohn shows you how filters can help you to overcome technical limitations and open up creative scope at the same time. You will learn how different types of filters work, when they are useful – and when they are not. Above all, however, you will understand how you can use them to precisely realize your image idea right from the shooting stage.
This is not just about ND or graduated filters, but about a deeper understanding of light, contrast and dynamic range. Why does a sunset look perfect to your eye – but often appears flat or overexposed on the sensor? How can you compensate for this discrepancy? And when has the point been reached where even the best RAW processing can no longer help?
Filter photography also means slowing down. Consciously working with the tripod, image composition and light leads to a more intensive examination of your subject – and ultimately to stronger images. At the same time, you will learn to remain flexible and combine different techniques such as HDR or digital graduated filters in a meaningful way.
What you will learn in the seminar
- Sound understanding of light, contrast and dynamic range
- Clarity about which filters you really need
- Practical strategies for convincing results directly in the camera
- A new, conscious approach to image composition and the shooting process
- Insights into professional workflows for nature and landscape photography
Your goal after the seminar
This seminar not only gives you answers to technical questions, but also changes your view of photography itself. It will show you how not to leave light to chance, but to direct it in a targeted manner – for images that are already convincing in the camera.
