Photography is easy …with and without flash

One photographer, one camera, one lens – and an attached system flash. In this workshop, Paul Leclaire shows how to create atmospheric portraits with minimal equipment and maximum attention to light, scene and expression. The aim is to use the small, black system flash specifically as a creative tool – not to flash, but to shape motifs with light.

Together we will explore how lighting moods can be created, intensified or subtly changed with the deliberate use of the flash. The focus is not on effects, but on images with character – supported by the flash, not dominated by it. The participants learn to see and assess light and to integrate it into the ambient light or to set contrasts in a targeted manner. The camera is deliberately kept mobile – photographs are taken from the situation, with a feeling for the moment and the image idea.

In the workshop, Paul Leclaire works with the Canon ETTL system and teaches how to make better use of natural ambient light by understanding the ETTL flash behavior. Those who master the control of the flash in relation to shadows and subject direction will create images with their own light character – independent of large equipment.

The workshop is aimed at photographers who are confident with their camera and flash technique. It is not about post-processing, but about finished images at the moment of the shot.

If there are 7 or more participants, a second model will be available so that all participants have enough time to take photos.

About Paul Leclaire

Paul Leclaire has been working as a freelance photographer for over four decades. His portraits are characterized by spontaneity, clarity and the charm of the imperfect. Instead of conventional recipes, he seeks new perspectives and tells little stories in his pictures – with light, perspective and feeling. He rarely gives workshops – all the more reason for him to live from experience, directness and an attitude that sees photography not as a technique but as an expression.
