Dance is movement, expression, moment. This workshop is not about classic ballet poses or static shots – but about the challenge of making danced movement photographically tangible. Paul Leclaire shows how dance improvisations can be creatively staged with available light and a simple system flash – without staged rigidity, but with a feeling for rhythm and timing.
Photographs are taken on location with two professional dancers. They work with spontaneous choreographies and out of movement – not arranged, but observed, captured and intuitively realized. The focus is on the use of natural light, white balance as a creative tool, the choice of suitable lenses and the interplay of exposure time, autofocus and shutter delay. The aim is to produce a finished image at the moment of shooting – not later on the computer.
The camera is seen as a tool: Those who have mastered aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and metering fields can fully immerse themselves in the movement. Participants are coached directly while taking pictures and learn to create powerful images with few resources. “The less you have in your pocket, the more freely you can photograph” is the principle.

Paul Leclaire has been working as a freelance photographer for over four decades and is known for his experimental, clear style. He is passionate about people in pictures – honest, spontaneous, expressive. His workshops are rare and practical – and thrive on experience, precision and a flair for the unplanned.
